CM Richter Scale
Sire: Allen Park Bald Eagle   Dam: Burleigh
DOB: 16th November 2007
About 3:38am while laying in the
swag in the back yard (for the 4th
night in a row) I was half awake
and heard the 'splooshing' of
Burleighs water breaking.  It
seemed to go on forever!!
We lay there for a second and then
hopped up to watch... You can see that
Folly was laying opposite Burleigh in the
next yard in the top left shot... and it didnt
take long for B1 (the cat) to come and
see what was going on.
One hoof up to the fetlock popped out and it was WHITE... we
thought "Great, at least one sock!"... as the front legs came out
they were just white all the way up which had us rather excited!
Then Burleigh needed some assistance as the 'little' (???) fella
was a bit stuck.... She may have had some trouble if Craig
hadn't rendered assistance.  A dark head followed the white
front legs and we could see his face markings....
His shoulders took a little work to get them through... however as soon as they were clear of her pelvis, he just
slipped into the world with ease!  You can see a fair bit of blood - he had a small bleed from the umbilicus as a result
of Burleigh standing a little too quickly - before the umbilicus had time to narrow and break away on its own.   A little
pressure to it soon stopped the bleed, and Craig iodined the stump.  He stood VERY quickly... and required no
assistance to get on his feet.  You can see Folly and Gryph were eager to check him out....
Ricky has legs that just go for miles and appear to be
nice and straight at this stage... which is very pleasing!
As Burleigh was eating her pellets, Ricky decided that
maybe thats where the milk bar was.... but had no luck!
We ended up giving Burleigh an Oxytocin injection just to
help let her milk down - her bag was full, but was tight
and she wouldnt let down and was very tender... within
minutes of the jab she was quite happy to let him suckle.
In daylight (ok, so it was JUST daylight) we found not only the one
meconium pile that we witnessed him pass, but quite a number of
piles.... that was pleasing! (Craig found one the hard way with his
bare feet... he didnt have his boots out there next to the swag -
which we stayed in for the rest of the night)  We decided to name
him CM Richter Scale as not only is he going to be BIG, but if you
look at his markings along his back, it looks like the readouts after
an earthquake!  If you look closely you will see he has a tiny dot in
his face marking as well!  We are very pleased with him!
"What lovely big ears you
have!" - hehehe.... He WILL
grow into them...  Ricky is quite
happy to get a pat and a
scratch and follows you around
the yard if his mother
allows.She was a little foal
proud today and when he cast
himself against the fence told
me in no uncertain terms to
GET OUT... she settled through
the day though.
As you can see in the bottom
photos, Spook, better known
as "The Greater Grey Carpet
Sloth" was there today to check
him out... The lovely big branch
hangs over the foaling yard
and the tree provides some
lovely shade for the horses!
Not only does the tree provide shade for the horses, it also provides a fantastic 'viewing platform' for
Spook and the other cats.... Its just not a birth without at least one or more cats present!   They
MUST be there to inspect the newborn foals - although it is a little concerning when Spook looks at
them like they are a side dish at times!  He's big enough to take one on should he get the
opportunity!

Keep an eye out for more photos of Ricky as he grows up!!
I will update with links as soon as I have them done!
