| The pages that are linked to from here are a collection of photographs taken of our herd at various times. Please dont let the green backgrounds of some images fool you into thinking we are in a lovely lush area! I just happened to take the photos at the time we DID have green! From the end of October through to Mid April we have nothing but bare dirt! The horses are hand fed all year round, so they have a constant nutrition value in their feed. We plant our paddocks so that we can graze them off for a couple of months. While they are grazing they are still being fed the lovely hay we get from our local hay supplier. Because we are on a sandy soil, the horses get access to hay 24/7 to keep them from picking up sand where it can be avoided. We use tractor tyres with the side wall cut out as hay feeders and find this reduces the wastage and stops them from peeing and pooing in their feed! The mares start to get a hard feed a couple of months prior to foaling, and then for the first few months while feeding their foals. How much they get after the foals are born depends entirely on their condition and the foals condition. We certainly dont want to be dealing with issues like OCD in the youngsters! If you see pages with GREEN in the backgroun/on the ground, they will all be in their winter woolies - its the ONLY time of year we have green feed around!!!! Oh well, cant have everything! Check back for regular updates on this page! |
