Kalgary What The Roc
Sire: Roc On  (Quarter Horse)
Dam: Jess (Standardbred)
DOB: 23rd January 2010
Gracie is somewhat of a surprise.... as you will see by
clicking on the link to Jess's photos - and the writeup
about her, the vet thought that she was not a viable
option as a broodmare as she seemed 'inactive' and had
a negative pregnancy scan!
Well, Gracie is definitely here, and Kathy, her owner had
to go keep checking all through the first day!
She had actually put Jess back into work and had her on
a diet as she was so fat - but she didnt look pregnant at
all!  She obviously carried the foal high and tight being a
maiden mare!  She just looked overweight!
The original plan with breeding Gracie was that Kathy
was going to keep her for herself as a riding horse.
When Jess was said to be infertile, Kathy gave up on the
idea of breeding one, and bought Legs (CM Midnight
Moonlight), so has a lovely yearling that she has grown
quite attached to!
Gracie is offered for sale - however if she doesnt sell, I
dont think Kathy will be too disappointed! - She will just
have two youngsters to bring on!

Gracie is a gorgeous girl, and is really well put together
and would make a fantastic all round horse.
She should mature 15.2hh or thereabouts, perhaps a
little over.
We will keep you updated with new photos as we have
them of her!   She is a real little sweetheart!

Below: The below 5 photographs of Gracie were taken
on the 4th of February 2010, she is aged 12 days old.
Gracie shows a cheeky attitude and 'I'm so good, you MUST look at me' even at this young age.
The surrounding photos were taken of Gracie and Jess on
the 12th February 2010 when we went up to Wirrulla to
meet the girl in person for the first time!
She is more amazing than we already thought she was
going on the first lots of photographs that we were sent of
her by Kathy and Gary.   She is an absoloute ripper of a foal!
Whats not to like about this little power
package??  She is a really nicely put together
baby. and boy can she move!!!
We are really thrilled with Rocs first baby in SA
and are really looking forward to seeing what
Jess has by him in early 2011!
That 'birthmark' on her near side is quite unusual.  It makes
her quite unique!

On the 12th March 2010, we went up and took some more
photographs of Gracie.   She is really looking fantastic, and
has the most amazing movement on her.
After showing off in the round yard for a few minutes, Gracie
followed Jess over to the stable yard, where she was about to be
introduced to her first halter.
These photographs of Gracie and Jess are
just so sweet, and Gracie is almost saying
'Mum, they are trying to catch me and put
something on my head!!'

Jess is just such a darling that she was not
fussed about her baby or where she was
really, as long as PK (Kathy and Garys
gelding) who was over the fence from them
in this yard, was not talking to Gracie!

Gracie is so independant that she doesnt tend
to hide under her mum or behind her mum at
all.   She likes to go it alone.

It was decided that now was the time to get a
halter on her and start getting her to come to
the pressure and learn all about leading.
Not overly impressed with being caught or having her
halter put on, Gracie decided that she should have a little
dummy spit, which of course is quite normal for a first time
with a halter and some pressure being put on the rope.

She carried on for about 30 seconds before giving up and
accepting cuddles and scratches from Craig quite happily.
Gary was standing at the stable gate talking to Jess and watching
- and yes he does have white paint on his face!!  He had been
painting our horse float for us (and has fixed it up for us - it
needed a few repairs - it looks fantastic and we will share photos
once its all finished!!).  Gracie relaxed into her pats quickly.
Rather than just pulling on her head to ask her to come forward, Craig put a
loop of rope around her backside and asked with the leadrope on the halter,
and when she resisted, backed it up with a bit of pressure on the butt rope.

Once she got the hang of this, Craig handed her over to Kathy who gave it a
shot and spent some time patting her as well as asking her to come forward.
Gracie did have a little dummy spit, however soon got
over it and came forward and stood quietly.
No one got worked up, there was as little stress as possible
involved - as it should be.   It was a positive experience.
Craig ran his hand down Gracies shoulder and front leg, and
picked up each of them and played with her feet.
She will have her first trim very shortly, so will need to get
used to all of this.
She had her first wormer the day these photos were taken
(the 12th March 2010), and her mum received her one that
was due at the same time.
Gary had a bit of a cuddle and a pat with Gracie, and Kathy had another
cuddle and pat as well before letting her go for the day.
Kathy and Gary will do a few minutes at a time each day and get her used to
being handled and touched all over.
In the very near future Gracie and her dear mum, Jess will be heading back down to CM Sporthorses for Jess to go back in foal
to Roc On for what we all hope is a carbon copy of Gracie!
On Saturday the 13th of March 2010, Kathy and Garys
son, Brody, who is 11, rode Roc and showed just what a
sweetheart he really is.
Brody was dying to have a ride on a horse, so we
popped him on the quietest horse on the property.
Kathy got her nose severely out of joint that Brody got
to ride Roc before SHE did!   We dont think he will be
letting mum forget it in a hurry!

Brody, click

Before anyone jumps up and down about putting a child on a stallion,
you have to remember this is not just ANY stallion, this is Roc - he is a
childs pony with testicles.... we have to check for a pulse most days.
Brody was fully supervised, in an enclosed round yard, had the proper
riding attire (boots, hard hat) and toe stoppers on his stirrups.
If we did not think that Roc was completely safe, Brody would not
have been allowed on him.
You cannot fault the temperament on this horse.  He is just amazing!
As for Gracie:  No photos, but on the 14th March, when we dropped Brody back off home at his mum and dads and visited
Gracie again, Craig caught her with ease, gave her pats and cuddles, as did Kathy, and then I went over and played with her too.
She led right off the bat without a bum rope this time, accepted scratches all over, stood quietly while we talked and ignored her
for a while and then patted her and played with her ears, and also stood there quietly while I put my arm over her back and
'hugged' her like a girth.   There was no hump or trying to get away at all.   She just stood and took it all in her stride!
She is an extremely quick learner, and it really would not take much work to have her ready to go out into the show ring as a
weanling in hand.
We will hopefully have some more photos of the girly for you soon!
