Allen Park Studs Herd - 26th August 2008 - The Colts!
On these new pages you will find three separate herds of horses we have running on
three of the properties at the moment.
Unfortunately we ran out of light to take photographs of the herd at the home block.
We will get a photo shoot of those horses done as soon as we can!
Above are the half brothers by Cherokee -
both born early 2007.  In the lead is Allen
Park Braveheart who is being retained.
The colts look lovely all galloping along
together, the bay boys are all young
thoroughbreds who will grow up and when
they are ready, be broken in and trained for
racing.  There is one among them who is on
the for sale page, however if he stays, he too
will probably race.   The little black colt behind
the bay and white out in front in the above
photograph is by Allen Park Bald Eagle out of a
roan welsh pony mare.  The coloured colts are
by Allen Park Cherokee.
Above left is Allen Park
Braveheart, and above
right is his half brother.
The TB colt for sale is on
the far left in the
photograph at left, and
the little black colt with
the white stripe down his
face on the right is the
one by Allen Park Bald
Eagle.  He is also on the
for sale page as is the bay
and white colt out in front
there as well.
Pictured right is AP
Dakotas foal from May
2007 by Cherokee.  Dakota
is a daughter of AP Bald
Eagle, out of a Clydesdale
mare.
This colt is of course then
half clydesdale and is a
full brother to AP
Geronimo and AP Lakota.
Below is the bay and white
colt by Cherokee out of a
TB mare.  He is 1/4
Clydesdale and lighter
boned than the colt at
right.
Pictured right is just one of the
colts 'paddock pals' - they are out
with a fairly large herd of cattle
on 900 acres.   They are on good
clover and medic along with
various grasses.
Having lots of area to run and
undulating hills in the paddock is
fantastic for their growing bones
and muscles.  They are regularly
checked on.
In the photograph at left you can
just see the dust created by the
colts cantering along the
paddock.
The colts are separated from the
mares and fillies when they are
old enough to have their
hormones kicking into gear!
They are generally run with just
other colts and geldings of all
ages, and on occasion, with the
stallions as well.  It just depends
on whether the stallions are
serving mares at the time or not.
You can see the differences in the 1/2
Clydesdale colt at right, and the 1/4
Clydesdale colt below.  Both are
lovely types, and are quite obviously
half brothers, however the half
clydesdale
is heavier boned and is a bit heavier
through the head as well.
Cherokee seems to consistently throw
the same build in all his offspring - with
the variations only being in the size of
bone depending on the dams breeding.
Braveheart, pictured above, is growing nicely.  He was born in February 2007, and although
he is very wooly with his winter coat at the moment, is quite refined in his build and is
going to be a lovely 'replacement' for Bald Eagle.  Nothing will replace Baldy, however this
young fellow is going to come very close.  He will finish up around the 15.3hh - 16hh mark -
so a bit taller than Baldy.  He will be tested to see if he is homozygus for Black next time he
is brought in and handled.  He has already had quite a bit of handling and has been a lovely
boy to deal with in every regard so far.
